How to Cope with Stress During the Holidays

holiday massage

It’s something we hear all the time when clients come in for a pre-holiday massage.

Us: All ready for the holidays?

Them: Ugh! I wish!

For a time of year that’s ostensibly about celebration and feelings of good will, the stretch between Thanksgiving and the New Year can feel awful demanding. We need to shop, cook, clean, travel, socialize and welcome guests, all while still handling day-to-day life.

Aromatherapy Benefits: How Plant Oils Can Help You Heal

aromatherapy benefits

The next time you walk out of an aromatherapy appointment feeling refreshed, take a moment to thank a man named Avicenna.

Avicenna was a Persian physician, astronomer and thinker whose 11th-century work, The Canon of Medicine, served as the standard medical text well into the 1600s. He’s also credited with developing the distillation methods used in modern aromatherapy.

But how did aromatherapy come about? We’ll answer that question below and discuss some aromatherapy benefits in the process.

What is a Swedish Massage?

what is a Swedish massage

We’ve written quite a bit on this blog about the benefits of a good massage, how it can alleviate back pain, lessen depression and anxiety, and help us recover from our workouts.

But not all massages are the same. There’s deep tissue massage, for example, for people who are experienced massage goers, and things like hot stone massage, where a masseuse uses intense heat to help release tension.

And then there’s Swedish massage, perhaps the most popular member of the massage family.

Why We Don’t “Double Dip” During Waxing

spa wax Philadelphia

As anyone who’s watched Seinfeld can tell you, double-dipping is bad etiquette.

It’s true at a social gathering, and it’s true when you’re getting a bikini wax.

If you’re searching for a bargain-priced Brazilian bikini wax, keep in mind that a place can’t possibly have hundreds of sticks at their disposal. If they did, they wouldn’t be able to make enough money to stay open.

The waxing at Body Restoration spa is priced accordingly so that you always have a clean and efficient waxing experience. We never double-dip our wax sticks, so the wax itself is never compromised. You’ll never receive a wax where the wax has been double-dipped with the same stick after touching someone’s skin and hair.

Thinking About a Facial ?

Spa facial restorationAre you thinking about having a facial at Body Restoration Spa? If you’ve had facials before, please note that we take the Skin Care Profile very seriously. It means that you would need to complete this client consultation form which is two sided. We recommend you ask for this facial form and take it home and complete it. It asks questions like, “What time of day do you see an oily shine come out on your skin?” Or, “how much plain water do you drink a day?” There are lifestyle questions, exfoliation questions, allergies, etc.

Complete the form when you are comfortable and not rushed so that your answers are as accurate as can be. Bring the form with you to your appointment. It beats coming for a facial and having to sit and rush through the form in order to start the service on time. These questions are taken into account when deciding what skin type you have, what skin condition you may have, special challenges on your skin that you would like us to address, how much steam is appropriate, any prescriptions you are using that may affect your skin, etc. Make the most of your facial appointment by completing the form ahead of time. You can print it from our web site by clicking here.

Spring is the perfect time of year to renew your skin with a spa facial. Put your best foot forward with a relaxing professional exfoliation and prepare for the warm weather to come. Depending on your skin profile, we will create a facial experience that will rejuvenate and soothe your skin. Contact us today by phone or through our website to schedule your appointment.

Treat Your Skin With A Facial This Winter Season

Cleaning face with cotton padsA facial can soften and hydrate, replenish and protect against the Winter weather. It’s not uncommon to feel lips chapping or wind burn on the face during these colder months. But with a creamy cleanser, light exfoliation, and a heavier moisturizer, your skin can be conditioned to withstand the cold, dry air felt all through Winter.

First we would have you complete the Skin Care Client Profile and look at questions like how much water you drink a day. We would ask about dryness, flakiness and tightness felt on your skin. We ask how much caffeine you have each day as caffeine can dehydrate the skin.

Then we would select the products based on your skin type. This is determined by what time of day you notice an oily shine coming out on your skin, if at all.

How Are the Basalt Stones Used in Stone Massage Sanitized?

CaraMassage_3We perform Stone Massage during October through April, or the Fall and Winter months.  We use a clean set of stones for each client. The stones are heated, oiled and used as an extension of the hands as they are effleuraged up and down the arms and legs, for example. Effleurage is a Swedish massage stroke where an open handed stroked is meant to warm the surface of skin and the muscles beneath. The stones can be turned on their sides and used to friction areas where adhesions have formed. This happens in the lower back due to long periods of sitting and not enough time to rest or stretch. The fascia (or the under-lying tissue) become bunched making certain movements like walking easier to maneuver on one side versus the other. One of the hips may be feel tired and stuck and it all has to do with everything being connected.

When we are finished a Stone Massage session, we place the stones in the dishwasher. They are washed and run through the full cycle. Then they are placed in a container until they are needed. We only have so many stones, so we may only be able to do so many Stone Massages in a day. The stone heater, that was modeled after an 18 quart turkey roaster, has an insert pan. This pan in also taken out and washed between treatments.

Pregnancy Pillow

bestof_prenatalWe just received a nod from Philadelphia Magazine for Best of Philly 2015 in Prenatal Massage. Being pregnant is a joyous time but it can also be an uncomfortable time. Callers will ask if we perform the massage session with the client lying on her side? This is also known as side-lying position. We can or we can position the pregnancy pillow known as the Body Cushion in place. This way a pregnant women in can lie safely on her stomach and receive a massage or even a back facial. We accept pregnant clients in their second or third trimester.

Why Do We Use Two Different Waxes?

Ever wonder why we not only use the Blue Wax (hard wax) which hardens and is removed by hand, but also a soft wax that relies on strips to remove it? The Blue Wax is formulated for coarse hair. It grabs thicker hair better than the soft wax, and it is reserved for areas where there is coarse hair like the bikini line on the under arms. It can also be used on the chin and on the upper lip especially in the corners of the mouth where hairs can be short and difficult to remove.

The soft wax is reserved for larger areas of the body like waxing a man’s back, or full legs or full arms. It is applied in a thin coat and a non-woven strip is placed over it to remove it. It is formulated for fine hair or thinner hairs that the Blue Wax will not grab. The soft wax adheres better to fine hairs that need something stickier to remove them.

If you’ve had Brazilian waxes and the hair on the bikini line has become so fine that the Blue Wax will not grab some of them, we can switch and use the soft wax on the area. We would attempt the whole area with the Blue Wax and then follow up with soft wax if needed. It saves a lot of time that would be spent tweezing if the hairs had thinned out so much that the Blue Wax wasn’t removing them. Using the soft wax for follow-up pulls will not hurt at this point in the service because 95% of the hair is gone. We are just making one more pull with a stickier wax to grab those last few hairs.
