Eight Foods for Healthier Skin

There are certain foods we eat that help certain parts of our bodies.

Fish, for example, boosts our brain power, while green vegetables like spinach and broccoli are part of any heart-healthy diet.

Our skin – often called the largest organ of the body – is no exception. Whether you want to prevent wrinkles, help circulation or give yourself a nice healthy glow, there are plenty of foods you can eat to give yourself a healthy skin.

Why We Don’t “Double Dip” During Waxing

spa wax Philadelphia

As anyone who’s watched Seinfeld can tell you, double-dipping is bad etiquette.

It’s true at a social gathering, and it’s true when you’re getting a bikini wax.

If you’re searching for a bargain-priced Brazilian bikini wax, keep in mind that a place can’t possibly have hundreds of sticks at their disposal. If they did, they wouldn’t be able to make enough money to stay open.

The waxing at Body Restoration spa is priced accordingly so that you always have a clean and efficient waxing experience. We never double-dip our wax sticks, so the wax itself is never compromised. You’ll never receive a wax where the wax has been double-dipped with the same stick after touching someone’s skin and hair.

Thinking About a Facial ?

Spa facial restorationAre you thinking about having a facial at Body Restoration Spa? If you’ve had facials before, please note that we take the Skin Care Profile very seriously. It means that you would need to complete this client consultation form which is two sided. We recommend you ask for this facial form and take it home and complete it. It asks questions like, “What time of day do you see an oily shine come out on your skin?” Or, “how much plain water do you drink a day?” There are lifestyle questions, exfoliation questions, allergies, etc.

Treat Your Skin With A Facial This Winter Season

Cleaning face with cotton padsA facial can soften and hydrate, replenish and protect against the Winter weather. It’s not uncommon to feel lips chapping or wind burn on the face during these colder months. But with a creamy cleanser, light exfoliation, and a heavier moisturizer, your skin can be conditioned to withstand the cold, dry air felt all through Winter.

First we would have you complete the Skin Care Client Profile and look at questions like how much water you drink a day. We would ask about dryness, flakiness and tightness felt on your skin. We ask how much caffeine you have each day as caffeine can dehydrate the skin.

Then we would select the products based on your skin type. This is determined by what time of day you notice an oily shine coming out on your skin, if at all.

How Are the Basalt Stones Used in Stone Massage Sanitized?

CaraMassage_3We perform Stone Massages October through April, or the Fall and Winter months.  We use a clean set of stones for each client. The stones are heated, oiled, and used as an extension of the hands as they are effleuraged up and down the arms and legs, for example. Effleurage is a Swedish massage stroke where an open handed stroke is meant to warm the surface of skin and the muscles beneath. The stones can be turned on their sides and used to friction areas where adhesions have formed. This happens in the lower back due to long periods of sitting and not enough time to rest or stretch. The fascia (or the under-lying tissue) become bunched making certain movements like walking easier to maneuver on one side versus the other. One of the hips may feel tired and stuck; it all has to do with everything being connected.

Pregnancy Pillow

bestof_prenatalWe just received a nod from Philadelphia Magazine for Best of Philly 2015 in Prenatal Massage. Being pregnant is a joyous time but it can also be an uncomfortable time. Callers will ask: can we perform the massage session with the client lying on her side? This is also known as side-lying position. The answer is: we can!  We can also position the pregnancy pillow known as the Body Cushion in place. This way a pregnant women can lie safely on her stomach and receive a massage or even a back facial. We accept pregnant clients in their second or third trimester.

Why Do We Use Two Different Waxes?

Ever wonder why we not only use the Blue Wax (hard wax), which hardens and is removed by hand, but also a soft wax that relies on strips to remove it? The Blue Wax is formulated for coarse hair. It grabs thicker hair better than the soft wax, and it is reserved for areas where there is coarse hair like the bikini line and the underarms. It can also be used on the chin and the upper lip, especially in the corners of the mouth where hairs can be short and difficult to remove.

The New Date Night: Couples Massage, then Dinner

Couples massage is a nice outing together and has often replaced the old stand-by of “dinner and a movie.” Most couples massage clients come for the massage first and head to dinner afterwards. If you are someone who falls asleep during movies, go ahead and nod off during your massage. You’ll feel refreshed with a feeling of clarity when it’s complete.

Couples massage in session before dinner is a better ordering of the two, if you will.

Contemplating a Back Wax?

Follow these Prep Steps and a back wax shouldn’t be that bad.

If you’ve had someone shave your back for you, please let it grow at least two to three weeks prior to your back wax appointment.

Avoid caffeine before your wax visit.

If you are taking an oral acne medication prescribed by the dermatologist, you cannot be waxed at all.

It is strongly recommended that you refrain from shaving your back going forward. Shaving toughens the hair making the wax more painful. The goal is to only wax the back so it will soften the hair and allow the hair growth to become sparser.

Please let us know if you’ve had a back wax before and whether or not you had any issues, i.e. break-outs on the back. This will allow us to determine which after products we will use to treat your back once the service is completed.

Prolonging the Effects of Your Massage

• After your massage, drink plenty of water through the next two to three days

• Eat light foods and try to rest after the treatment

• Do not engage in any stressful activity if possible. If working out at the gym, it is not recommended to lift weights after a deep tissue massage

• Enjoy the application of oils from the treatment as they continue to moisturize your skin

• Moist heat (i.e. hot water packs) and ice can be used alternately for 10 minutes on areas of soreness to heal the areas where deeper massage work was performed

Epsom Salts

• Soak in a hot bath with Epsom salts (pictured). Epsom Salts help relieve pain and soreness, and helps draw toxins from the body

• It is not uncommon to feel soreness after a massage. The health spa massage therapist has uncovered an area where there is a lot of tension. Alternating hot and cold compresses on the area of soreness will help, as well
