Gua Sha means “scraping.” It is also referred to as Muscle Scraping. A titanium Gua Sha tool is applied to the skin and is pushed or pulled and moved in either a head to tail or tail to head motion. This manual stimulation degranulates mast cells, producing histamine. Histamine stimulates nerves. The pressure of the tool creates “sha,” which appear as pin-sized red dots known as “petechiae” – a localized trauma as the body responds. Gua Sha is effective for chronic tendonitis, stress injuries, muscle strains and a host of other non-acute soft-tissue pain. There may be tenderness on the area where Gua Sha was performed. The petechiae marks will remain for the 3-7 days. See images. The result is decreased pain, improved circulation and flexibility.
