Swedish Massage

Swedish massage uses a series of elongated, continuous strokes, along with kneading and cupping motions. This type of massage is meant to relax and soothe. The pressure is moderate or medium in terms of how deep your therapist will work the muscles. Clients who prefer a medium to light touch in massage, generally schedule a Swedish massage.

Deep Tissue, Sports, and Prenatal

Offshoots of Swedish massage:

Deep Tissue massage is best suited to those who are experienced spa-goers. If you are someone who needs a heavier hand in order to get any benefit out of a massage, you should request a therapist who is very strong. If you enjoy a strong touch, the therapist will use more intense pressure to work deeper into the connective tissue and break down adhesions beneath the skin. Think elbows and forearms used to disperse back tension and wake up tired limbs.

Sports massage is geared towards someone who is preparing for an athletic event, or recovering from a workout. This type of massage uses faster Swedish strokes meant to invigorate making it ideal 1) before or after an athletic event or exercise regimen, or 2) to treat a specific sore spot or injury. It helps with recovery time after, and aids in preparing the muscles before the event. Strokes may include wringing, squeezing and stretching of the muscles.

We also feature the bodyCushion, a specially designed pregnancy pillow that allows expecting mothers to lie safely and comfortably on their stomachs into the later stages of pregnancy. We employ the bodyCushion in all Prenatal massages at Body Restoration Spa.

Myofascial Release

$120 | $135 | $160

Myofascial Release (via the John Barnes Method) is a gentle, hands-on technique that works with the body’s fascia—the connective tissue that wraps around everything. Starting the session with an in-depth intake & sometimes a postural analysis, this is great for those with chronic illness/pain, old injuries, postpartum, and post-surgery. Using slow, sustained pressure without oils or force, it helps release deep tension and restrictions, making space for pain relief, better movement, and a sense of ease in the body.

NOTE: Bring sports bra and underwear or comfortable shorts for the initial postural analysis & the switching of positions on the table.

Cupping Therapy

Cupping therapy involves the use of cups to create suction on your skin. This suction stimulates muscle and fascia tissue, increases blood flow, and helps relieve tension. The massage therapist will create a vacuum on your skin with the cups by using a manual pump. When the cup is placed on your skin, the natural vacuum draws your skin in to begin the cupping therapy. Cupping is a release using suction to pull blood and fluid that is “stuck” (which includes toxins and waste products) to the surface layers of the dermis to put it back into the blood stream for processing. The newly oxygenated blood then flows back into an area to promote healing.

Gua Sha

Gua Sha means “scraping.” It is also referred to as Muscle Scraping. A titanium Gua Sha tool is applied to the skin and is pushed or pulled and moved in either a head to tail or tail to head motion. This manual stimulation degranulates mast cells, producing histamine. Histamine stimulates nerves. The pressure of the tool creates “sha,” which appear as pin-sized red dots known as “petechiae” – a localized trauma as the body responds. Gua Sha is effective for chronic tendonitis, stress injuries, muscle strains and a host of other non-acute soft-tissue pain. There may be tenderness on the area where Gua Sha was performed. The petechiae marks will remain for the 3-7 days. See images. The result is decreased pain, improved circulation and flexibility.

Massage FAQs

I've never had a massage before. What's the best massage to get if you are a first timer?

We recommend a Swedish massage for 60 minutes. It's the relaxing approach to massage. The pressure is moderate and the strokes are long and sinuous meant to lull you to sleep.

Am I able to speak up if the pressure applied is too deep or not strong enough?

Absolutely. Please feel free to mention to your massage therapist if the pressure needs to be adjusted. If you like the pressure to be firm, schedule a Deep Tissue massage. The massage therapist may be able to tell if the pressure is too strong, if a client tenses during the treatment or flinches when too much pressure is applied. Communicate.

I don't want the massage to hurt; I just want it to feel good. What massage is recommended for light pressure?

We recommend a Swedish massage. It's meant to relax the body and enable the client to zone out and go into a "massage coma." The pressure is medium to light and doesn't involve any pummeling.

Does a Deep Tissue massage hurt?

When performed properly, a Deep Tissue massage should get deeper as the session progresses. The muscles need to be warmed up first with firm pressure. Later in the session, elbows and forearms are used to break down tension. Elbow work may be uncomfortable, but the massage therapist will check in if the pressure too strong.

How long of a massage session do I need to book?

We recommend 60 minutes to start. You can let the massage therapist know the areas where you are feeling the most tension, i.e. neck and shoulders. They will tailor the session and focus on those areas. When they discuss your in-take form or ask you what has brought you in for the session, you can let them know if you would like the focus to be on your, i.e. back and neck. Or, you can say, "I'd like a little bit of time everywhere with the most time being spent on my back and neck."

How often should I come for a massage?

In the beginning, space your massage sessions two weeks apart until you start feeling better. Then come every month or every six weeks for stress maintenance. It may take a few sessions in the beginning to ease the tension and pain you are feeling. Follow-up sessions scheduled closer together are needed in the beginning if it's been a while since your last massage.

How do I prepare for a massage session?

Complete the in-take form sent via text or email. Arrive 15 minutes early for the appointment. Drink plenty of plain water before your massage session. If you are dehydrated, the muscles may feel like beef jerky and be very difficult to massage. Wear comfortable clothing and try not to schedule anything directly after your session so you have time to soak in the benefits.

When the massage is finished, what should I be doing for after care?

Continue to rest, drink plenty of plain water, stretch, and ice the areas where deeper massage work was performed.
